ACOG Statement on FDA Approval of Pfizer-BioNTech’s COVID-19 Vaccine
Washington, DC – The following is a statement from J. Martin Tucker, MD, FACOG, president of the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG):
“With today’s Food and Drug Administration (FDA) licensure of Pfizer-BioNTech’s COVID-19 vaccine, clinicians can feel even more confident in recommending vaccination for their patients, including pregnant patients. All eligible individuals, including those who are pregnant, should feel similarly confident in being vaccinated against COVID-19.
“Unfortunately, obstetrician-gynecologists are seeing firsthand the rise in hospitalizations among COVID-19 positive pregnant patients across the country and the heightened dangers of infection during pregnancy. Now with FDA licensure of the Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine, along with ACOG, the Society of Maternal-Fetal Medicine, the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and 18 organizations representing maternal care experts and public health professionals all recommending vaccination during pregnancy, the consensus couldn’t be more clear that vaccination against COVID-19 during pregnancy is safe and effective. ACOG continues to strongly recommend that all eligible people, including those who are pregnant, get vaccinated against this life-threatening virus.
“Vaccination is the single best tool we have to protect us as individuals and fellow members of our communities against COVID-19.”
