Eva Chalas, M.D., FACOG, FACS, Becomes 71st President of the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists

Washington, D.C.; Garden City, NY — Today, Eva Chalas, M.D., FACOG, FACS, of Garden City, New York, became the 71st president of the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG), based in Washington, D.C.

ACOG Staff member Eva ChalasSince the 2020 ACOG Annual Clinical and Scientific Meeting was canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Dr. Chalas was sworn in during ACOG’s Virtual Annual Business Meeting.

During her speech, Dr. Chalas announced that her presidential initiative will include finding new opportunities in the ways in which obstetrician–gynecologists care for patients in order to personalize care and support better health outcomes. 

Dr. Chalas emphasized that “we must continue to be a trusted resource for our patients and address gaps in women’s health care to enhance the quality and value of our services.”

Dr. Chalas is a professor and vice chair of obstetrics and gynecology at New York University Long Island School of Medicine. She holds the administrative position of physician director at the Perlmutter Cancer Center   at NYU Winthrop Hospital in Mineola, New York, where she also serves as surgeon co-Champion for the National Surgical Quality Improvement Program.

Dr. Chalas received her medical degree and completed her residency training in obstetrics and gynecology at Stony Brook School of Medicine. She completed a subspecialty fellowship training in gynecologic oncology at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center in New York City, where she also served as the American Cancer Society Fellow.

Dr. Chalas has held many roles in ACOG throughout her career in obstetrics and gynecology. She has been the chair of District II and the chair of the Council of District Chairs, has served on many College committees, and has held numerous leadership positions at both the national and District level. Notably, she has served as secretary-treasurer for Society of Gynecologic Oncology, as two-term governor of the American College of Surgeons, vice chair-elect for the Foundation of Women’s Cancer, and the Society of Gynecologic Oncology representative to the ACOG executive board.

Dr. Chalas has received many awards and honors in teaching, cancer care, and research. Throughout her career, she has been dedicated to advocating and caring for women with gynecologic cancers or complex gynecologic problems.
