Coronavirus Response Coordinator Birx: Your Ob-Gyn is Committed to You

During the daily White House Coronavirus Task Force Briefing on April 8, Ambassador Deborah Birx, MD, Coronavirus Response Coordinator, referenced her conversation earlier that day with American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists CEO Dr. Maureen Phipps, expressing reassurance about the precautions taken by obstetrician-gynecologists to keep patients safe. Ambassador Birx shared an important message to every pregnant person and expecting family: your obstetrician-gynecologist is committed to you and ensuring your safety during labor and delivery. She advocates for pregnant patients to continue accessing prenatal care and working with their physician to develop a care plan that is risk-appropriate and right for them.
The American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists, together with the American College of Nurse-Midwives, American Academy of Family Physicians, and Society for Maternal-Fetal Medicine recently released a statement on Patient-Centered Care for Pregnant Patients During the COVID-19 Pandemic affirming that hospitals and birth centers that are both licensed and accredited remain safe places to give birth in the United States, and that physicians, certified nurse-midwives and certified midwives, and the entire health care team will work to ensure that precautions are taken to make labor and delivery as safe as possible for their patients.
