ACOG Reinvents the Pregnancy Wheel

Launches New Due Date App

Washington, DC—Today, the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG) launched a new Estimated Due Date Calculator (EDD Calculator), the first app strictly based on joint recommendations from ACOG, the American Institute of Ultrasound in Medicine (AIUM) and the Society for Maternal-Fetal Medicine (SMFM) for determining pregnancy due dates.

With over 1,800 ob-gyn related apps on the market, ACOG's EDD Calculator is the only one that reconciles the discrepancy in due dates between the first ultrasound and the date of the last menstrual period. The EDD Calculator algorithms are based on the joint ACOG-AIUM-SMFM Committee Opinion, Method for Estimating Due Date, which standardizes assigning due dates among medical professionals. The EDD Calculator also recalculates the due date based on ultrasound or on assisted reproductive technology (ART) to assist health care providers with patients who undergo embryo transfer, or IVF, in adherence to the Committee Opinion. In addition, the app contains a "time machine" function that allows the user to determine a fetus’ gestational age at a specific date.

"The EDD Calculator has ACOG guidelines built into the logic, therefore it is the most accurate tool available for ob-gyns and their staff," stated Nathaniel DeNicola, MD, MSHP, FACOG, ACOG Digital & Social Media Expert Consultant and Senior Fellow at the Penn Social Media and Health Innovation Lab. "This is the only app that is based on ACOG guidelines and was beta tested by ob-gyn experts. It’s made by ob-gyns, for ob-gyns."

Although the EDD Calculator will be most helpful for ob-gyns and other obstetric providers, its simple and straightforward format makes it easy to use for all members of the health care team, including patients.

ACOG supports the use of the EDD Calculator and will transition away from the physical plastic wheel in favor of this modern reinvention.

Katherine Chen, MD, MPH, Professor and Vice Chair of Ob-Gyn at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai says: "The ACOG EDD Calculator is an accurate app that received high marks for comprehensiveness, function and design, resulting in an APPLICATIONS© score of 13 out of 16. That's the highest score among all of the other pregnancy wheel apps that my colleagues and I previously evaluated in our study published in Obstetrics and Gynecology in June 2015. In addition, it is the only pregnancy wheel app on the market that has a special feature that allows redating based on ultrasonography."

The new EDD Calculator is part of the primary ACOG app.
