A Note to the ACOG Community on the Events of January 6, 2021

ACOG Community,

Yesterday, we watched with shock, sadness, and horror as people violently stormed the United States Capitol building, endangering the lives of our elected leaders, their staff and facilities staff, law enforcement officials, and other bystanders. Many of you have walked those halls in the past as advocates for your patients, meeting in those very same offices, and seeing the images must certainly have struck you deeply and personally. We condemn these actions and denounce those who incited and perpetuated this violence.

As the nation’s leading organization of physicians dedicated to the health of women, ACOG has long acknowledged the significant interplay between human rights—including the right to vote—and the overall health of women, their families, and their communities. As such, ACOG affirms the rights of people to vote and to be full and equal participants in their government and society. We condemn violence and oppose any attempt to undermine the results of free and fair elections or to disenfranchise people from voting.

ACOG’s offices are located in Washington, DC near the U.S. Capitol building. Many of our staff members live in the District, as do some of our members. We appreciate your thoughts and support during this time.

We are grateful to all of you—our members—who continue to deliver care during these challenging and trying times.
