Emergencies in Clinical Obstetrics (ECO)

Course Description

The Emergencies in Clinical Obstetrics (ECO) course has been created from the most updated and evidence-based literature to train all levels of providers to work together during obstetric emergencies. Version 3.0 includes instructor-led or online lectures to provide the necessary background as well as clinical checklists and guidance for reference during the course and for future reference at your institution.

The five units covered in this simulation include:

  • Breech vaginal delivery
  • Shoulder dystocia
  • Postpartum hemorrhage
  • Umbilical cord prolapse
  • Teamwork and communication during obstetric emergencies

Learning Objectives

At the completion of this course, you will have a solid understanding of why simulation training is so important for obstetric patient safety as well as know how to implement and run the course itself.

Participants should be able to:

  • Describe evidence-based protocols for common obstetric emergencies
  • Demonstrate correct technique and performance of key responsibilities during simulated obstetric emergencies
  • Practice teamwork and communication for simulated cases complicated by shoulder dystocia, postpartum hemorrhage, umbilical cord prolapse, and vaginal breech delivery
