The ACOG course Advanced Surgical Simulation and Endoscopic Surgical Simulation (ASSESS) offers a solid understanding of why simulation training is so important for gynecologic surgery. Through the ASSESS course, ACOG advocates for the training of laparoscopic surgery so that residents and seasoned surgeons alike can practice techniques, review procedures, follow evidence-based best practice guidelines, and receive feedback during simulated laparoscopic surgery, vaginal hysterectomy, and other advanced surgical procedures.
This course features about two hours of didactic lecture, followed by three hours of simulated practice and is organized in the following three units:
- Laparoscopic hysterectomy
- Vaginal hysterectomy
- Midurethral [retropubic and transobturator] slings
The ACOG ASSESS course provides each learner with a solid understanding of why simulation training is so important for gynecologic surgery, and offers self-assessment skills on various gynecologic surgical procedures. By the end of this course, participants should be able to perform the following objectives for each procedure:
- List steps
- List benefits
- List indication and qualifications
- List available and common simulators
- Identify, assemble, and use all necessary equipment
- Identify the number, size, and locations of incisions for port placement to facilitate surgery
- Explain how to use the ACOG assessment tool for competency evaluation
