Join us at the HPV Vaccine Summit at the District VII Annual Meeting. All are invited to attend presentations and workshop discussions on ongoing projects in collaboration with national and local Oklahoma groups to improve HPV vaccine rates across District VII. Goals for the summit include connecting local organizations with Ob-Gyns to improve access, addressing reimbursement issues and dispelling common misperceptions in social media campaign ads.

The 2023 Contraceptive Access Summit will discuss the status of reproductive health care in ACOG District VII.
This symposium is designed to discuss the status of contraception access across ACOG District VII and provide opportunities to network with partners in reproductive healthcare, discuss current and upcoming legislation, and outline tactics to expand contraceptive access across the district.

8 a.m.–NoonPre-Conference: Diversity Equity and Inclusive Excellence Summit
The Diversity Equity and Inclusive Excellence (DEIE) Summit will provide participants with an update on ACOG’s Collective Action Addressing Racism. Through a combination of interactive exercises and didactic sessions, summit participants will discuss the current landscape and reflect on their own lived experiences while gaining familiarity with and developing skills in anti-oppression. The material covered may be applied to multiple areas of life, whether at work or in the community.

At the ACOG District VII Maternal Mortality Mortality Summit, participants will continue to take advantage of the momentum gained at last year's summit with lively discussions and planning for the future. The foci this year are reducing maternal morbidity and mortality related to cardiovascular disease and working to launch a district-wide data-sharing project. Join us to contribute your great ideas and learn more about how to get involved with this crucial effort. This activity has been approved for MOC Part IV credits for physicians.

Highlights will include common themes pertinent to working with one’s maternal–fetal medicine consultant.
J. Martin Tucker, MD, FACOG, is chair of the department of obstetrics and gynecology at the University of Mississippi Medical Center. He is a graduate of the University of Mississippi School of Medicine, where he also completed his residency in obstetrics and gynecology. He completed his fellowship in maternal–fetal medicine at the University of Alabama at Birmingham. He is a past chair of District VII and past president of ACOG.

1:45–2:15 p.m.Your Best You: Surviving a Malpractice Case
William Fiasco, JD
The practice of medicine as seen through the prism of the American jury trial system can be like attempting to mix oil and water. The process can seem daunting, unfair, and protracted to physicians. As a lawyer with over 35 years of experience defending physicians, I hope to lift the curtain to reveal some of what really matters in these lawsuits and how physicians can be better prepared to deal with the process and become a significant partner in defending the care provided.
Bill Fiasco is a partner at Atkinson, Brittingham, Gladd, Fiasco & Edmonds, a full-service law firm in Tulsa, Oklahoma. Fiasco devotes well over 90% of his practice to the defense of medical professionals of all types and has tried approximately 50 cases to verdict in state and federal courts all over Oklahoma. His trial work has resulted in his admission to membership in the American College of Trial Lawyers and the American Board of Trial Advocates. Fiasco obtained both his undergraduate and law degrees from the University of Oklahoma. He lives in Tulsa with his wife. Their two children have emptied the nest and only a cat remains.

This discussion will feature several journal articles and topics of interest in the field of urogynecology. Dr. Wood will highlight best practices in the performance of vaginal hysterectomy, management of voiding dysfunction after surgery, novel and standard prevention of urinary tract infections, and novel commercial products available to our patients.
Sara Wood, MD, MHPE, FACOG, is a dual board-certified vaginal surgeon and expert in the field of urogynecology and reconstructive pelvis surgery. She is the current obstetrics and gynecology program director at Mercy Hospital St. Louis and thrives in the blend of surgery and education. Surgically, her practice focuses on the vaginal approach to caring for patients with pelvic floor disorders and providing improvement to their quality of life.

This talk will provide attendees with a brief update in clinical care topics shared in common between the reproductive endocrinologist and obstetrician–gynecologist. Topics will include PCOS management, when to offer surgical interventions such as myomectomy or salpingectomy prior to fertility treatment, indications to refer to REI for infertility evaluation and treatment, and preimplantation genetic testing strengths and limitations.
Heather Burks, MD, FACOG, is an assistant professor of obstetrics and gynecology in the section of reproductive endocrinology and infertility at the University of Oklahoma Health Sciences Center, where she has been practicing since 2015. She completed her residency in obstetrics and gynecology at the University of Oklahoma and her fellowship in reproductive endocrinology and infertility at the University of Southern California. She is currently the director of fertility preservation at OU Physicians Reproductive Medicine. Her research interests include infertility treatment, PCOS, and fertility preservation.

Resiliency is key in a career in which adverse outcomes means a patient dies, is injured, or has persistent medical problems. We will discuss keys to successfully navigating hard outcomes and strategies for recovery. The talk will include opportunities for reflection and questions.
James is a therapist and the clinical director of Heritage Family Counseling Services in Wichita, Kansas. For the past 20 years he has been working with individuals, families, and couples to assist them in overcoming life challenges. Over the course of the last decade, that work has called him to focus his efforts on the field of sexual health and functioning. He has partnered with Melissa Hague, MD, FACOG, to collaborate on many cases to address the psychological and relational challenges as Dr. Hague seeks to resolve the medical challenges. James and his bride Julie have been married 26 years and they have one daughter who is 19.

Stephanie Costa, MD, FACOG, has a wholehearted interest in helping physician peers and health care colleagues attain well-being and fulfillment in all aspects of their lives and strives to remind them of the desire that prompted them to seek careers in medicine. She is the founder of WHōL, a company dedicated to helping physicians and health care organizations thrive and rediscover their purpose. She is the physician well-being and leadership coach for Central Ohio Primary Care, the largest private practice primary care group in the United States. As codirector of the robust Physicians Leadership Academy of the Columbus Medical Association, she has completed training in many methods used to tackle complex problems, such as transformative change, system strategies, Art of Hosting, and executive coaching training. Dr. Costa brings well-being to women’s health specialists throughout the country as chair of the Well-being Committee of the U.S. Women’s Health Alliance. She has coached hundreds of physicians during the pandemic and uses her communication skill sets and well-being knowledge to help physicians and practices better navigate the modern landscape of medicine.

Kathryn E. Sawchak, MD, FACOG, and Kent R. Bradley, MD, FACOG, will discuss multiple issues for physicians relating to personal finance and practice management. They will share some of their personal experiences and recommendations and provide examples of strategies participants may want to explore further. At the end of the session, there will be a Q and A session.
Kent R. Bradley, MD, FACOG, is a clinical professor and vice chair for the University of Kansas School of Medicine-Wichita and is in private practice with Associates in Women's Health in Newton, Kansas. He served as an oral board examiner for the general boards for 15 years. Dr. Bradley has always been keenly interested in personal finance and has given talks on saving, investing, insurance, and retirement planning to medical students, residents, and attendings for the past 25 years.
Kathryn Sawchak, MD, FACOG, founded The Woman’s Place, an obstetrics and gynecology private practice in Hutchinson, Kansas, where she has practiced since 1999. She helped develop an outpatient surgery center which then became an inpatient and outpatient surgery specialty hospital, Summit Surgical. For fun and adventure, Dr. Sawchak enjoys spending time with family, going to the lake, and traveling.

This session is designed to answer important clinical questions that the obstetrician–gynecologist specialist encounters regarding conditions with the potential for malignancy: When should I refer an adnexal mass? How do I approach the radiographic finding of uterine mass. What do I do if I cannot rule out sarcoma? We will discuss these questions and several others.
Jason Knight, MD, FACOG, FACS, FICS, serves as the director of gynecologic oncology for the Saint Luke’s Health System in Kansas City, Missouri. He is originally from New York City. He trained in Boston and Cleveland, then practiced for seven years at the Cleveland Clinic before moving to Kansas City, Missouri, three years ago. In addition to clinical practice, he is passionate about exploring what wellness means and the tools available to foster wellness among those around him.

In this session we will explore various nutrition trends and discuss which populations may find these trends most helpful, what plant-based eating means and how to fit it into multiple diet patterns, and cultural relevance and socioeconomic considerations.
Laura Kerns is a registered dietitian and certified specialist in oncology nutrition. She received her master’s in public health from the University of Michigan and completed her dietetic internship at Tulane University School of Public Health and Tropical Medicine. She is the senior clinical dietitian for Ochsner MD Anderson Cancer Center. She spends her time developing new programs and providing education around the country on integrative medicine and the benefits of plant-based eating.
Kerns oversaw the research, development, and operations of Louisiana’s first hospital-based food pantry and was recognized as a New Orleans CityBusiness Health Care Hero for this work. She also is one of the recipients of the Abbott Nutrition Alliance Award for her work in malnutrition.

Robin Bone, MD, FACOG, is a board-certified obstetrician and gynecologist was born and raised in New Orleans, Louisiana. After receiving her medical degree from LSU Health School of Medicine in New Orleans in 1996, she completed her obstetrics and gynecology residency in 2000 at Louisiana State University School of Medicine in New Orleans.
With over 23 years of experience, Dr. Bone is a practicing obstetrician–gynecologist generalist in the New Orleans and Metairie community. She spent the first 16 years of her career running a private practice and the last seven years on faculty at Ochsner Health. Dr. Bone has been as active member in ACOG, serving in leadership roles the past 10 years and is currently serving as the Louisiana Section chair.
Serving women in adolescence, during pregnancy, and though menopause, her practice philosophy is a personalized, holistic approach being proactive about disease management and prevention so that women live a healthy and vibrant life.
