Although obesity is generally perceived to be a disease, the significant weight bias and stigma in health care affect patient care and present a significant barrier to obesity treatment. This discussion will focus on the prevalence of weight bias and stigma in health care, the effects on health care access and quality of care, and the financial and economic consequences. We will also discuss tools to identify implicit and explicit biases and measures and resources to address weight stigma and minimize its impact in clinical practices.
