Medical Student Essay Contest

Submissions to the annual District IX Medical Student Essay Contest are now being accepted! We look for original essays based on medical students’ own experiences and ideas about why they are interested in obstetrics and gynecology.

This year’s prompt is:

"The opposite of racist isn't 'not racist’. It is 'anti-racist.' What's the difference? One either allows racial inequities to persevere, as a racist, or confronts racial inequities, as an anti-racist.”—Ibram X. Kendi

Respond to the quote above and describe in your words the role of today’s obstetrician–gynecologist in antiracism work.

Essays should be no more than one page in length and must be received by June 28, 2021. The winner will receive sponsorship to attend the Annual District Meeting, on September 30–October 2, 2021. The essay contest is open to medical student members of ACOG District IX who are attending medical school in California or Ecuador only. Previous winners are not eligible but may submit an essay if they entered before and did not win.

Submit your essay to Michelle Clark, District IX Manager, via email at by June 28, 2021. Each essay must be accompanied by a separate cover sheet including the author’s full name, phone number, email, name of medical school, and year in medical school.
