ABSTRACT: Obstetrician–gynecologists can play a pivotal role in managing most aspects of hypertension, including primary prevention, screening, and initial treatment. This monograph is designed to provide a review of the prevalence, detection, and treatment of high blood pressure, with a special emphasis on isolated systolic hypertension in older women, hypertension in pregnancy, the most prevalent causes of secondary hypertension, perioperative management, and hypertensive emergencies. Also provided is a focused discussion of the pharmacology of the available antihypertensive agents and their uses and limitations, lifestyle modifications, alternative therapies, and device-guided therapies in the management of the hypertensive state.
