ABSTRACT: Metabolic bone disease, particularly osteoporosis and primary hyperparathyroidism, occurs frequently in women. Therefore, it is important that the practicing obstetrician–gynecologists be aware of the clinical characteristics, diagnostic evaluations, treatments, and indications for referral to a rheumatologist or an endocrinologist, when appropriate. This monograph provides an overview of the basic pathophysiologic factors of metabolic bone disease and addresses management modalities for patients with different types of this disease.
