Advanced Surgical Simulation and Endoscopic Surgical Simulation (ASSESS)

This course is intended for course Directors who will host the course at their home institutions or for their district. Those who would like to improve their skills should take the course in person at the Annual Clinical and Scientific meeting, district meetings, and other in-person opportunities.

-------

The ACOG course Advanced Surgical Simulation and Endoscopic Surgical Simulation (ASSESS) offers a solid understanding of why simulation training is so important for gynecologic surgery. Through the ASSESS course, ACOG advocates for the training of laparoscopic surgery so that residents and seasoned surgeons alike can practice techniques, review procedures, follow evidence-based best practice guidelines, and receive feedback during simulated laparoscopic surgery, vaginal hysterectomy, and other advanced surgical procedures.

The course is organized in three units, each which includes simulation materials and guidelines, assembly directions, and clinical checklists:

  1. Laparoscopic Hysterectomy
  2. Vaginal Hysterectomy
  3. Midurethral [retropubic and transobturator] Slings

The ACOG ASSESS course provides each learner with a solid understanding of why simulation training is so important for gynecologic surgery, and offers self-assess skills on various gynecologic surgical procedures. By the end of this course, participants should be able to perform the following objectives for each procedure:
