Statement by ACOG President John C. Jennings, MD, Congratulating Sylvia Burwell on her Confirmation as HHS Secretary

June 6, 2014

Washington, DC — The American Congress of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG) congratulates Sylvia Burwell on her confirmation as Secretary of the Department of Health & Human Services (HHS). Ms. Burwell brings an impressive breadth of both public and private sector experience that will prove invaluable in her position leading HHS through a significant period of change for our nation’s health care system. She is widely respected by her colleagues for her dedication, leadership, and attention to detail.

ACOG is confident that Ms. Burwell will bring this same level of commitment to HHS as she works to solve some of the most pressing challenges in health care, including repealing and replacing the flawed Medicare Sustainable Growth Rate (SGR). We appreciate her public support for repealing the SGR and welcome the opportunity to work with her to replace it with a system that focuses on quality care and provides stability in physician reimbursement.

ACOG thanks Congress for confirming Ms. Burwell’s nomination in a timely manner. This is a critical year for implementation of the Affordable Care Act (ACA), and Ms. Burwell’s quick transition to HHS will help ensure that she is adequately prepared to address the opportunities and challenges to come. We look forward to working with her to implement the provisions of the ACA that impact ob-gyns and the women we treat, and we’re confident that she will bring the strong leadership to HHS that physicians and patients depend on to navigate our ever-evolving health care system.
