Promote Vaginal Birth and Reduce Cesarean Births: Speakers Bureau

This project utilizes the CMQCC Toolkit to Support Vaginal Birth and Reduce Primary Cesareans, a comprehensive, evidence-based “how-to” guide designed to educate and motivate maternity clinicians to apply best practices for supporting vaginal birth. To assist participating hospitals in implementing the toolkit, a Speakers Bureau consisting of obstetric leaders, nurses, and certified nurse midwives from around the state has been assembled to provide education and mentoring. Teams consisting of one obstetrician and one labor and delivery nurse, and a certified nurse midwife when appropriate, will work with each hospital.

While ACOG’s priority is to assist hospitals that have not yet achieved an NTSV Cesarean Section rate of 23.9% (which is the Healthy People 2020 goal), it is clear this is not the optimal rate. The Speakers Bureau would also like to work with hospitals already below 23.9% to help learn what the safe and optimal rate might be and to understand how hospitals have been able to achieve lower rates.

ACOG has learned from previous quality improvement projects that it is necessary to have a leader and champion at each hospital to have a successful initiative. ACOG hopes you will consider that role or identify a colleague interested in this implementation program to help reduce your primary Cesarean section rate.

Please contact Michelle Clark, District IX Program Manager, at with questions or to enroll your hospital in the program.
