General directories and resources

Administrators in Medicine (AIM): Association for State Medical Board Executive Directors - DocFinder
This website has links to individual state medical boards. State medical boards have directories of physicians to verify licensure. Some state boards also allow the user to search for the name of a doctor and identify any disciplinary actions.

American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists
This is the national professional organization for obstetrician-gynecologists.
To search by state, click “search by state” on the left, then click on the state of interest, and a list of cities will be displayed.  Click on the city of interest, and a list of physicians will be displayed (50 per page).  You can also search by physician name or zip code.  You can also enter a partial zip code to find a broader selection of physicians. The green bullet to the left of a physician's name identifies that they have a practice page with contact information and hours of operation.

American Board of Medical Specialties
The ABMS is the organization that represents the 24 approved medical specialty boards in the United States (i.e. for the American Board of Obstetrics & Gynecology).
You can use this website to verify if a physician is board certified or to find board certified physicians in your area. You can search by physician name, location (city, state, zip code), specialty, or any combination of those. When you click “search,” you will have to either log in or register on the site to continue the search. Registration is free. Once you’ve logged in, click “continue.” A list of physicians will then be displayed. When you click on a physician’s name, more information will be displayed.

American Medical Association
The AMA is the professional organization for physicians in the United States.
Click the “for Patients” box. Click “DoctorFinder.”  Review the disclaimer and if it is acceptable, click accept to advance to the search system. To search by a physician's name, type in the physician's last name and the state and click “quick search.”  Click on the name of the physician, and general information about the physician will be displayed. If the physician is not an AMA member, there will be no results at first; to see the list of physicians, click “view nonmember physicians” then “list non-members” on the next screen. The physician's name will appear in a table. To search by specialty, choose a state, city (and a zip code if you need one, i.e. for New York City), and select the specialty of choice (i.e. obstetrics and gynecology).  A list of physicians will be displayed. The web site will also tell you if the physician is a member of the AMA.  The physician members can also personalize their information pages with practice information such as the insurance coverage they accept, if they accept new patients, and their office hours.

MedlinePlus Directories
MedlinePlus provides links to directories to help patients find health professionals, services, and facilities. Organizations with an online directory are grouped by category (“Doctors and Dentists – General,” “Hospitals and Clinics – General,” etc.). Click on the name of the organization of interest to go to that organization’s provider directory.

Ob-Gyn Subspecialty and Related Societies

American Association of Gynecologic Laparoscopists
AAGL is the professional organization dedicated to gynecologic endoscopic surgery.
Click the physician finder button near the top of the screen. You can search by location (city, state, zip code, or radius in miles from a particular zip code) and specialty. To search, enter your criteria, check the box to accept the terms of service for using the AAGL physician finder, then click “search physician directory.” A list of physicians will then be displayed.

American Society for Reproductive Medicine
ASRM is the professional organization for those who are interested in reproductive medicine and biology, including reproductive endocrinology and infertility.
Click “Find a Health Care Provider” on the right side of the screen. On the search screen, you can search by name or location. Click “more search options” to search by miles from a location, language, or profession. After you click “go,” a list of providers fitting your criteria will be displayed. Click on a provider’s name for more information.

American Urogynecologic Society
AUGS is the professional organization for obstetrician-gynecologists who have an interest in urogynecology, including pelvic floor dysfunction and urinary tract disorders.
Click “Find a Provider,” near the center of the screen or at the top. Select either “Search for any criteria” or “Search for exact criteria,” and enter any combination of information about the physician you wish to find in the boxes – such as name, city, state, zip code, and/or facility. Click “search” for a list of physicians.

Society of Gynecologic Oncology
SGO is the professional organization for obstetrician-gynecologists who are also board certified sub-specialists in gynecologic oncology (cancer).
For a physician in the United States, enter your state or zip code for a list of physicians in your area; you can also search by physician name. Searching by state alone will give you a more comprehensive list.

Society for Maternal-Fetal Medicine
SMFM is the professional organization for obstetrician-gynecologists who are also board certified sub-specialists in maternal-fetal medicine (high-risk pregnancy).
You can search by a physician’s last name or by city and state, or state alone by entering the appropriate information in the boxes on the right side of the screen.
