Maternal Quality Improvement Program (MQIP)

Maternal Quality Improvement Program (MQIP)

Overview

The Maternal Quality Improvement Program (MQIP) launched in 2014 as a result of collaborative efforts between the American Congress of Obstetricians and Gynecologists and the American Society of Anesthesiologists. MQIP is a national outcomes registry for maternity care centered around labor and delivery. Through clinical performance measures and data quality metrics, MQIP provides a unique opportunity for providers to better understand the overall quality of the maternity care provided within their institution. Participating institutions will be able to see their performance on specified metrics and can utilize that information to take appropriate steps to improve outcomes. Further, MQIP will help to address the variations in care that currently exist between institutions, to aid in driving care standardization that has been shown to improve outcomes.

MQIP was designed to utilize clinical data entered by providers at the point of care and extracted directly from the electronic health record (EHR) without the need for burdensome chart abstraction. ACOG has been working closely with major EHR vendors, and is pleased to announce that sites upgrading either Cerner Maternity® or Epic Stork® in 2017 will have all of the required data elements and necessary reporting capabilities for MQIP included in the update package. Additionally, Diplomates of the American Board of Obstetrics and Gynecology will be eligible to receive MOC Part IV credit for MQIP participation.
