I feel that, as an OBGYN, we have the ability to make the student and resident relationship with patients much better. There are a few things we can do that will help ease this relationship; one thing we can do is introduce the students. It’s nice to go into the room and let the patient know that a student is going to be involved in their care and ask them if it’s okay for the student to participate. It’s nice to let them know the name of the student, the level of their training, and whether they’re a male or female. By asking the patient if a student can participate, I feel it allows the patient to feel like they are part of the decision and also part of the team. By introducing the students ourselves, it allows the patient also to know that we respect the student and welcome them as part of our team. It’s also important to let the patients know the role of the student. What is the student going to be doing in their care, and at what point are you going to come in, and what you’re going to do as well? With residents, I feel it’s important to refer to them as a doctor. I’ve noticed that some residents like to introduce themselves by their first name, but as the staff, if we refer to them as a doctor that allows the patient to know that they are physicians involved in their care. I think that a new OB visit and a pre-op visit are very good times to let the patient know that there will be students and residents involved. If you happen to know the name of the student or the resident that will be participating, it’s very nice to let the patient know the names at that point. That way, the morning of the procedure patient isn’t caught off guard when a student comes to introduce themselves or a resident comes to introduce themselves, and letting the patient know the role of the student or resident in their care during that procedure is also very important. This is how I practice.
