Practice Management: CMS Now Accepting Applications for EHR Hardship Exceptions for MACRA Quality Payment Program

The Medicare Access and CHIP Reauthorization Act (MACRA) Quality Payment Program requires that individual physicians and groups use electronic health records (EHRs) in a meaningful way to earn points in the Advancing Care Information performance category.

In 2017, this category contributes 25 percent to the overall performance score. However, if your practice experienced insufficient internet connectivity, extreme and uncontrollable circumstances, lack of control over certified EHR technology, or some other issue, you can now apply for a hardship exception to have the performance category weighted to zero so you are not penalized for issues beyond your control.
