Membership & Fellowship: Survey Says…2017 Annual Meeting Was Great Success

Each year, the ACOG Annual Clinical and Scientific Meeting serves as a milestone for ACOG, particularly in moving toward our key strategic goals, known as the ACOG 2020 initiatives. As we seek to deliver a compelling member experience, strengthen the ob-gyn profession and ACOG as an organization, and leverage our capabilities to improve women’s health, the Annual Meeting is a key benchmark of our progress.

One of the ways we measure our success is our yearly Annual Meeting survey.  The survey for the 2017 meeting held in San Diego, showed record high satisfaction, building on improving performance over the last two years. The feedback that you and your colleagues share offers insight into the areas of success and needed improvement for the Annual Meeting. ACOG is already working to apply this feedback to the planning of the 2018 Annual Meeting in Austin, Texas.

2017 Annual Meeting Highly Prized

On May 10, 2017, following the 2017 Annual Meeting, a survey was emailed to roughly 4,000 attendees with usable email addresses, and a total of 1,161 attendees completed the questionnaire (29 percent response rate).

What did ACOG learn?

  • The meeting keeps getting better. 93 percent were satisfied or very satisfied with the overall Annual Meeting, a significant* improvement over satisfaction in both 2015 (84 percent) and 2016 (90 percent).
  • The meeting delivers what attendees want. Survey results showed that increasing knowledge is the leading reason for attending the Annual Meeting (95 percent), and nearly nine in 10 attendees were satisfied with the outcomes of their experience in 2017.
  • Other key objectives for conference attendees include networking with others in the ob-gyn profession, connecting with friends and colleagues, and learning about new products and services. More than three out of four were satisfied the opportunities available at the Annual meeting (74 percent, 75 percent, 71 percent respectively).
  • Satisfaction was very high for the most-attended meeting events, clinical seminars (50 percent very satisfied, 95 percent overall satisfaction) and colloquia (52 percent very satisfied, 97 percent overall satisfaction). Other popular opportunities that received very high satisfaction included the hands-on courses (59 percent very satisfied, 98 percent overall satisfaction) and the postgraduate courses (56 percent very satisfied, 96 percent overall satisfaction).
  • 78 percent utilized the Annual Meeting App, and the strong majority of users (93 percent) were satisfied with the experience, particularly with the session listings and customizable calendar features.

As a testimony to the success of the 2017 Annual Meeting, 85 percent are likely to recommend to their colleagues that they attend the 2018 Annual Meeting in Austin, Texas on Friday, April 27 to Monday, April 29, 2018.

How is the 2018 Annual Meeting using this attendee feedback?

  • Among 2017 attendees, most preferred was the schedule of Friday through Sunday, which is the planned schedule for the 2018 Annual Meeting.
  • 65 percent of attendees are interested in having a motivational or inspirational speaker as part of the Opening Ceremony and President’s Program, which is a key priority for ACOG President Haywood L. Brown, MD, who is currently finalizing next year’s speakers. Look for the announcement about the 2018 program this December.
  • Based on the reported preferences for postgraduate and hands-on courses, ACOG will be increasing the number of three-hour courses available in 2018.
