Washington, DC -- A lot has changed since 1997, the year The American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG) debuted Managing Menopause and the Years BeyondTM. Now called pauseTM, the consumer magazine celebrated its 10th anniversary with a special spring/summer edition.
The menopause magazine has received multiple national and international awards through the years, and most recently, was recognized with an Award of Excellence, two Awards of Distinction, and one Honorable Mention in the international Communicator Awards competition. It also captured two APEX 2006 Awards for Excellence for publication design and writing.
Ten years ago, the phrase "hormone replacement therapy" was often used instead of "hormone therapy," implying that hormones needed to be replaced once women entered this natural phase in their lives. The Women's Health Initiative was just getting under way, and the Internet was a new concept in American culture.
"Ten years ago, most of the 45 million women approaching or just past menopause were faced with an overwhelming array of conflicting studies on how best to manage the symptoms and health risks associated with this biological milestone," said Isaac Schiff, MD, chair of the pauseTM Medical Advisory Board. "Our mission was to create a comprehensive guide to help make sense of the research and provide objective recommendations for women in midlife."
As pauseTM celebrates 10 years of educating millions of women, the magazine-which was created and is produced by ACOG's Office of Communications-also celebrates the women who have embraced the magazine since its debut. Over the years, women have read the magazine cover to cover, saved copies for future reference, photocopied articles and requested extra issues to share, and asked their ob-gyns about health issues and advice they discovered in the pages of pauseTM.
Women and their doctors will continue to find the same trusted information they've come to expect from the magazine. Articles cover issues such as how to get a grip on your weight, get started in a fitness program, keep your sex life satisfying and safe, and get a handle on menopausal symptoms. "Women today are uniquely and proactively serving as their own health advocates, and pauseTM is an invaluable resource to them. That millions of women every year over the past decade have repeatedly turned to ACOG to help them navigate through the life changes of perimenopause and menopause is, in and of itself, worth celebrating," noted Penny Murphy, MS, director of ACOG's Office of Communications. She added, "We're pleased to provide this service to our ACOG Fellows and the women they care for."
"One of the magazine's many strengths is in its dedicated and knowledgeable Medical Advisory Board," noted Dr. Schiff. "In the past 10 years, pauseTM has relied on the expertise of leading ob-gyns in the field for the latest updates on the science. Their immense commitment to women's health is truly commendable, and it goes without saying that we couldn't have done it without them."
