55th Annual Clinical Meeting of
The American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists

San Diego, CA -- The following awards were presented during ACOG's 55th Annual Clinical Meeting in San Diego, held May 5 through May 9, 2007.

ACOG/3M Pharmaceuticals Research Award in Human Papillomavirus
This $7,500 award is given to a Junior Fellow or Fellow of ACOG to perform clinical research that will improve the understanding of genital health in the area of HPV-induced vulvar disease. This year's award went to:

Shana N. Wingo, MD -- Fellow, Gynecologic Oncology, University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center, Dallas, TX, "Determining the Feasibility to Detect Circulating Invasive Cervical Cancer Cells"

ACOG/Bayer Healthcare Pharmaceuticals Research Award in Contraception
This $25,000 award is given to a Junior Fellow or Fellow of ACOG to perform research in the area of contraception, such as estrogen supplementation during the traditional hormone-free interval. This year's award went to:

Tessa E. Madden, MD, MPH -- Clinical Instructor, Department of Ob-Gyn, Johns Hopkins Bayview Medical Center, Baltimore, MD, "The Estradiol Patch for the Management of Intermenstrual Bleeding in Levonorgesterol Intrauterine Device Users"

ACOG/Bayer Healthcare Pharmaceuticals Research Award in PMS/PMDD
This $25,000 award is given to a Junior Fellow or Fellow of ACOG to perform research that will improve understanding of Premenstrual Syndrome/Premenstrual Dysphoric Disorder (PMS/PMDD). This year's award went to:

Jennifer E. Dietrich, MD, MSc -- Instructor, Division of Pediatric and Adolescent Gynecology, Department of Ob-Gyn and Women's Health, University of Louisville School of Medicine, Louisville, KY, "Effectiveness of Yaz® and Yasmin® Administered Orally and Vaginally for the Primary Treatment of Premenstrual Dysphoric Disorder"

ACOG Community Service Award
This award is given to Junior Fellows or Fellows of ACOG from one or more ACOG districts that have performed outstanding community service. Award recipients receive a $500 honorarium plus free registration to attend the ACOG Annual Clinical Meeting. This year's awards went to:

Cynthia Chazotte, MD -- Professor and Vice Chair, Director of Obstetrics and Perinatology, Department of Ob-Gyn and Women's Health, Albert Einstein College of Medicine of Yeshiva University/Montefiore Medical Center, Bronx, NY (ACOG District II)

Sally W. Nalesnik, MD -- Major, US Air Force, MC, FS, Landstuhl Regional Medical Center, Landstuhl, Germany (ACOG Armed Forces District)

ACOG Distinguished Service Award
This award is given to an outstanding individual in obstetrics and gynecology who has made important contributions within ACOG, government, research, teaching, or in direct patient care. This year's awards went to:

Mitchell J. Besser, MD -- Senior Lecturer, Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology, Groote Schuur Hospital, University of Cape Town, South Africa

Philip N. Eskew Jr, MD -- Director of Physician and Patient Relations and Clinical Professor of Obstetrics and Gynecology, Indiana University, Indianapolis, IN

Stanley A. Gall, MD -- Professor of Obstetrics, Gynecology, and Women's Health and Professor of Public Health and Information Sciences, University of Louisville, Louisville, KY

Donald F. Richardson Memorial Prize Paper Awards
This award is given to two Junior Fellows of ACOG for papers presented at an ACOG district meeting in the preceding year. Each award recipient receives $1,000 in addition to $750 for travel expenses to ACOG's Annual Clinical Meeting. This year's awards went to:

Christopher T. Lang, MD -- Fellow, Maternal-Fetal Medicine, Ohio State University Medical Center, Columbus, OH, "False-Positive Gestational Diabetes Screening-Is There an Association with Large-for-Gestational Age Fetuses and the Attendant Complications?"

ACOG/Eli Lilly and Company Research Award for the Prevention and Treatment of Osteoporosis This $15,000 award is given to a Junior Fellow or Fellow of ACOG to perform research in the area of osteoporosis. This year's award went to:

Thomas D. Kimble, MD -- Conrad Contraception Fellow, Eastern Virginia Medical School, Norfolk, VA, "Measuring the Activity of CYP3A4, a Member of the Cytochrome P-450 Family, to Predict Excessive Bone Loss in Adolescent Users of Depot Medroxyprogesterone Acetate"

ACOG Honorary Fellowship Award
This award is given to individuals from any country for their outstanding achievement in the field of obstetrics and gynecology or an allied discipline. These individuals have obtained national and international recognition by being elected president or senior officer of a national or international obstetric and gynecologic society or organization. This year's awards went to:

George K. Creatsas, MD, PhD -- Professor of Obstetrics and Gynecology and Chair of the 2nd Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology, University of Athens, Greece

Allan Templeton, MBChB, MD (HONS) -- Regius Professor of Obstetrics and Gynaecology, University of Aberdeen, Aberdeen, Scotland

ACOG Issue of the Year Award
This $10,000 award is given to a Junior Fellow or Fellow of ACOG for the development of a thoroughly researched and referenced paper. This year's award went to:

Melissa A. Merideth, MD, MPH -- Fellow, Clinical and Biochemical Genetics, National Human Genome Research Institute, National Institutes of Health, Bethesda, MD, "Ethical Issues Unique to Genetic Testing"

ACOG/Kenneth Gottesfeld-Charles Hohler Memorial Foundation Research Award in Ultrasound
This $15,000 award is given to a Junior Fellow or Fellow of ACOG with the opportunity to perform research or advanced training that is ultrasound-specific. This year's winner is:

Susan M. Sheridan, MD -- Resident, Department of Ob-Gyn, University of Wisconsin School of Medicine and Public Health, Madison, WI, "Sentinel Lymph Node Mapping in Early-Stage Endometrial Cancer: Sonohysterographic Injection and Cytologic Analysis of Distention Media"

ACOG/Merck & Company Inc. Research Award on Adolescent Health Preventive Services
This $15,000 award is given to a Junior Fellow or Fellow of ACOG to perform research in the area of adolescent preventive health. This year's award went to:

Rebecca B. Perkins, MD -- Instructor of Obstetrics and Gynecology, BIRCWH Scholar, Boston University School of Medicine, Boston, MA, "Factors Affecting HPV Vaccination in Underserved and Minority Adolescents"

ACOG/Merck & Company Inc. Research Award on Immunization
This $15,000 award is given to a Junior Fellow or Fellow of ACOG to advance knowledge on issues related to immunization in the ob-gyn practice. This year's award went to:

Wendy S. Vitek, MD -- Resident, Department of Ob-Gyn, University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine, Pittsburgh, PA, "Developing a Comprehensive Immunization Program: Surveying Vaccination Needs and Patient Interest at an Academic Women's Medical Center"

ACOG/Ortho Women's Health & Urology Academic Training Fellowships in Obstetrics and Gynecology
This $30,000 stipend provides academic training fellowships to two Junior Fellows or Fellows of ACOG to spend an extra year doing work that will help train them for an academic career in ob-gyn. This year's awards went to:

ACOG Outstanding District Service Award

This $5,000 award recognizes outstanding research published in Obstetrics & Gynecology. Each year, a distinguished panel of former editorial board members from the journal selects the top four articles. The award is given to the department from which the research came. This year's awards went to:

Katherine S. Sandhu, MD -- Fellow, Department of Female Pelvic Medicine and Reconstructive Surgery, Albert Einstein College of Medicine/Montefiore Medical Center, Bronx, NY, "Alterations in Smooth Muscle in the Lower Urogenital Tract of Women"

Warren H. Pearse/Wyeth Pharmaceuticals Women's Health Policy Research Award
This $15,000 award is given to a Junior Fellow or Fellow of ACOG for research in the area of health care policy. The research should address an aspect of policy that either defines, assists, or restricts the ability of the physician to deliver health care to women in general or in a specific area. This year's award went to:

Scott A. Sullivan, MD -- Assistant Professor, Department of Ob-Gyn, Medical University of South Carolina, Charleston, SC, "Maternal and Perinatal Outcomes Associated with Physician Distribution in States that are 'Red Alert' for Medical Liability Crisis"

Wyeth Pharmaceuticals Section Award
This $5,000 award and recognition certificate is given by the College to the ACOG section that has contributed most to the field of ob-gyn during the preceding year. The award, established by ACOG in 1971, is underwritten by a grant from Wyeth Pharmaceuticals. This year's award went to:

Florida Section, District IV and Edward Carney, MD, Chair, Florida Section -- Project on "Cardiovascular Health for Women"
