Awards Presented at the
57th Annual Clinical Meeting of
The American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists

Chicago, IL -- The following awards were presented today during ACOG's 57th Annual Clinical Meeting, held May 2–May 6, 2009.


ACOG Community Service Award

This award is given to Junior Fellows or Fellows of ACOG from one or more ACOG districts who have performed outstanding community service. Award recipients receive a $500 honorarium plus free registration to attend the ACOG Annual Clinical Meeting. This year's award went to:

Martin J. Caliendo, MD -- Ob-gyn in practice, Davenport, IA (ACOG District VI)


ACOG Distinguished Service Award

This award is given to outstanding individuals in obstetrics and gynecology who have made important contributions within ACOG, government, research, teaching, or in direct patient care. This year's awards went to:

Richard Allen, MD -- Clinical Professor, Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology, Oregon Health & Sciences University, Portland, OR

Ridgely C. Bennett, MD, MPH -- Former Medical Officer, Center for Drug Evaluation and Research, US Food and Drug Administration

John Yeh, MD -- Professor and Chair, Department of Gynecology-Obstetrics, University at Buffalo, the State University of New York


ACOG Award for International Service

This award is given to an ACOG Fellow who is currently or recently actively involved in a community program designed to help underserved or poorly served patient populations outside the geographical confines of the College. Award recipients receive a $1,000 honorarium plus free registration to the ACOG Annual Clinical Meeting. This year's award went to:

Amanda J. Simsiman, MD, Commander -- Medical Corps, US Navy, San Diego, CA (ACOG Armed Forces District)


Donald F. Richardson Memorial Prize Paper Award

This award is given to two Junior Fellows of ACOG for papers presented at an ACOG district meeting in the preceding year. Each award recipient receives $1,000 in addition to $750 for travel expenses to ACOG's Annual Clinical Meeting. This year's awards went to:

Anthony N. Imudia, MD -- Wayne State University School of Medicine, Detroit, MI; "Retrieval of Trophoblast Cells from the Cervical Canal for Prediction of Abnormal Pregnancy"

Sharai C. Amaya, MD -- Greenville Memorial Hospital, Greenville, SC; "Dietary Impact on Endometriosis: A Closer Look at the Active Ingredients of Red Wine and Soy"


ACOG Honorary Fellowship Award

This award is given to individuals from any country for their outstanding achievement in the field of obstetrics and gynecology or an allied discipline. These individuals have attained national and international recognition and have a relationship with activities in the US involving women's health care. This year's awards went to:

Gamal I. Serour, MD -- Professor of Obstetrics and Gynecology, former Chair of the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology, and former Dean of the Faculty of Medicine of Al Azhar University, Cairo, Egypt

Shirish S. Sheth, MD -- Consultant Gynecologist at Breach Candy Hospital and Hurkisondas Hospital, Mumbai, India

Klaus Vetter, MD -- Chair of the Clinic of Obstetrics at the Vivantes Neukoelln Hospital, Berlin, Germany, and Professor at Berlin Humboldt University


ACOG Issue of the Year Award

This $10,000 award is given to a Junior Fellow or Fellow of ACOG for the development of a thoroughly researched and referenced paper. The topic for this year was "Establishing an Office-Based Patient Safety Program." This year's two awards went to:

Rajiv B. Gala, MD -- Clinical Faculty, Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology, Ochsner Medical Center, New Orleans, LA

Michele G. Curtis, MD, MPH -- Associate Professor, Department of Obstetrics, Gynecology, and Reproductive Sciences, University of Texas-Houston Health Science Center Medical School, Houston, TX


ACOG/Kenneth Gottesfeld-Charles Hohler Memorial Foundation Research Award in Ultrasound

This $10,000 award or two $5,000 awards are given to Junior Fellows or Fellows of ACOG to perform research or advanced training that is ultrasound specific. This year's awards went to:

Kimberly A. Kho, MD -- Fellow, Minimally Invasive Gynecologic Surgery, Atlanta Center for Special Pelvic Surgery, Atlanta, GA


ACOG Outstanding District Service Award

This national award honors Fellows of ACOG who have performed outstanding and truly unique services at the ACOG district level. This year's awards went to:

Thomas F. Baskett, MB -- ACOG District I - Professor of Obstetrics and Gynecology, Dalhousie University, Halifax, Nova Scotia

Howard L. Minkoff, MD -- ACOG District II - Distinguished Professor of Obstetrics and Gynecology, State University of New York Health Science Center, and Chair of the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology, Maimonides Medical Center, Brooklyn, NY

Anna Marie D'Amico, MD -- ACOG District III - Gynecologist in practice, Wilmington, DE

Luis Ben Curet, MD -- ACOG District VIII - Professor Emeritus, University of New Mexico School of Medicine, Albuquerque, NM

Carla G. Hawley-Bowland, MG, MC USA -- ACOG Armed Forces District - Commander of the US Army North Atlantic Regional Medical/Walter Reed Army Medical Center, Washington, DC


ACOG/Roy M. Pitkin Award

This $5,000 award recognizes outstanding research published in Obstetrics & Gynecology. Each year, a distinguished panel of former editorial board members from the journal selects the top four articles. The award is given to the department from which the research came. This year's awards went to:
