Part III
Professional Responsibilities

"To hold him who has taught me this art as equal to my parents and to live my life in partnership with him."—Hippocratic Oath (circa fourth century BCE)

As the 21st century unfolds with all its technologic advances, the concept of medicine as a profession persists. What duty do obstetrician-gynecologists owe to their present and future colleagues in the modern medical community? What obligations do they share in ensuring the continuation of the specialty and the pursuit of new medical knowledge?

This part of Ethics in Obstetrics and Gynecology is focused on the relationship of obstetrician-gynecologists with their colleagues within the specialty and beyond. It offers ethical guidance on the formation of new specialists in obstetrics and gynecology. Consultation and referral relationships can advance the best interests of patients, and practical information is provided on establishing these relationships. Research poses special requirements, both ethical and regulatory, and these are addressed as well. Finally, other chapters address the fiduciary responsibilities of obstetrician-gynecologists to their patients and the ethical obligation not to abuse this trust.
