Routine Screening Welcome

Welcome to ACOG's HIV Home Page. This site provides information about women and HIV, routine HIV screening as a component of gynecologic and obstetric care, and includes specific information about HIV and its impact on women of color. This information will be of interest to clinicians as well as the general public. Some documents are protected and available to MEMBERS ONLY  as indicated. All other information is available to anyone visiting the site.

There are more than one million individuals living with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) and acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS) in the United States today, and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) estimates that there are approximately another 250,000 individuals living with undiagnosed HIV infections. In 2005, women represented 27% of all new HIV infections in the United States, up from 8% in 1985. In the past, HIV screening for nonpregnant women was usually based on risk. However, the CDC and ACOG now recommend routine HIV screening for women aged 19-64 years and targeted screening for women with risk factors outside of that age range. As the primary providers of women's health care, obstetrician-gynecologists can play an important role in identifying infected women by incorporating routine HIV screening into gynecologic and obstetric care.

ACOG has continued its HIV prevention activities, and in August 2008 released new recommendations for routine HIV screening, Committee Opinion 411 Routine HIV Screening and Committee Opinion 414 HIV and AIDS and Women of Color. Additionally, with the help of CDC funding (Grant NO. U65PS000813), ACOG is developing activities to implement CDC's new guidance and increase the number of HIV-infected women who know they are infected.
