Smoking Cessation During Pregnancy:
A Clinician's Guide to Helping Pregnant Women Quit Smoking

This free CME-accredited guide outlines how to integrate the "5 A's" - an efficient and evidence-based approach to asking about and treating tobacco use - into a clinical setting serving pregnant women. It includes how to integrate smoking cessation intervention into routine prenatal care, photocopy-ready office tools and informaiton on coding for tobacco use screening and intervention.

Smoking Cessation During Pregnancy Committee Opinion #316
Six-page document, published October 2005, outlines an office-based protocol on how to identify pregnant patients who smoke and provide effective treatment. Essential elements of the intervention are described, including how to ask about smoking status and provide cessation counseling during a routine prenatal office visit. The bulletin also includes information on the epidemiology of smoking during pregnancy, treatment issues pertaining to pregnant women who smoke heavily, smoking reduction, pharmacotherapy, health care support systems, and physician coding for this intervention. A listing of resources is included.

 

Smoking and Women's Health, in Special Issues for Women's Health
This chapter in the book, Special Issues in Women's Health, describes the health impact of smoking on women's health, including reproductive and nonreproductive effects. It reviews the 5A's approach to intervention and reviews pharmachotherapy. The chapter highlights considerations for special populations and has an extensive resource list.

 

Treating Tobacco Use and Dependence 2008 Update/ US Department of Health and Human Services Clinical Practice Guidelines are available free.
