Health Care for Lesbian & Bisexual Women

This slide set, including nearly 100 slides on CD ROM, with corresponding lecture notes, glossary, and resource lists, is a training module on the health care issues for lesbian and bisexual women and has been created to disseminate accurate information on lesbian/bisexual health to health care providers. It was developed by the ACOG Committee on Health Care for Underserved Women to increase the ability of health care providers to:

• Understand what measures can be taken to help develop a welcoming office atmosphere for lesbian and bisexual patients
• Recognize the potential structural, financial, personal and cultural barriers that lesbian women encounter when seeking/needing health care
• Recognize demographic factors that may increase disease risk among lesbians
• Identify STI risks and safer sex practices for lesbian and bisexual patients
• Understand potential psychosocial effects of homophobia and the subsequent impact on mental health
• Describe lifespan issues, in particular the health concerns for lesbian and bisexual adolescents, as well as issues that aging lesbians face
