Hosted by "physician mentors," this CD-ROM was designed to empower physicians to effectively navigate the legal system, recognize and cope with the accompanying symptoms of litigation stress, and emerge from such painful experiences intact. Primary content areas include: Handling an Adverse Event; Dealing With the Lawsuit; Understanding Pre-Trial Discovery; Deciding Whether to Settle; Getting through the Trial; Life after the Trial; Stress Relievers & Tools.

Upon completion of this program, participants will be able to:

  • Define what is meant by an adverse event and explain the steps to take as soon as one has occurred
  • Recognize the warning signs of a potential lawsuit
  • Explain the procedures for responding to a lawsuit
  • Describe and prepare for a discovery deposition
  • Discuss the key elements of a trial and provide a list of the usual participants
  • Explain the key factors in preparing a successful defense and mitigating the risks caused by litigation stress
  • Summarize the stress factors and coping tools associated with each stage of litigation
  • Identify the benefits and challenges of settlement
  • Define post-trial motions and appeals
  • Identify options and strategies for "moving on" after a verdict
