Colorado Section October Newsletter

                                                                                                       7 October 2009

Colorado Section of ACOG:

Thanks to all of you who made the trip up to Boulder for our last meeting.  It is always fun to see some of the physicians who don’t usually make it to the meetings in Denver.

Dr Nanette Santoro was introduced as the new Chair of the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at University of Colorado Denver.

Dr. Droegemueller has not changed since I first met him during my training.  He looks and sounds the same as he did then. I’m not sure that I like people who never appear to age.   I did, however, learn that those were not alligator shoes that he was wearing.  His talk was well received as he presented his ideas about the future of residency training.  There were several points that he made which I thought were useful to me.

*We don’t do a good job of exposing medical students to career choices before we         expect them to pick a residency program.

*Residents coming out of training are looking for a different style of practice than those who came out in the past.

*Physicians who are leaving practice in the future will have a much larger hand held knowledge base to work with when treating patients.

*Resident physicians should have an indivilized training program that will allow them to pick an area of the specialty.  Learning should be more self-directed.

Mentors:

ACOG has a new award for mentors of Young Physicians or Junior Fellows in practice.   If you are a Young Physician or Junior Fellow who has been mentored by someone special, I would encourage you to nominate them for this award. You can get more information from the ACOG website

We also have medical students in the community who need mentors. This usually doesn’t take a lot of time, and it is a great way to expose students to our Specialty.  I would encourage you to consider having a student in your office.

Oh Yes – the comment about the shoes - From Dr. Droegemueller’s talk: You know that you are getting old when someone compliments you on your alligator shoes before they realize that you are bare-foot.

Hope to see you at the meeting!
