Overview
Since 2001, the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists, District II (ACOG) and the New York State Department of Health (NYSDOH) have collaborated on the Safe Motherhood Initiative (SMI).The SMI strives to improve women's health through quality improvement. This initiative is New York's response to a national effort to reduce pregnancy-related deaths and racial disparities in maternal mortality.
Maternal Mortality Reviews
A major component of the SMI is to conduct timely, on-site maternal mortality reviews. These reviews inform ACOG's development of state-wide recommendations and educational materials. Maternal mortality affects all obstetric providers and hospital participation in the review process is critical to improving maternity care in New York State.
ACOG is presently conducting maternal mortality reviews.
If your hospital has experienced a maternal mortality please complete the maternal death notification form and fax it to ACOG's confidential registry. If you have any questions, please contact Katy Stevenson, Director of Medical Education at kstevenson@ny.acog.org or (518) 436-3461.
