Nancy C. Chescheir, MD, Selected New Editor of Obstetrics & Gynecology

Washington, DC -- Nancy C. Chescheir, MD, of Chapel Hill, NC, has been selected as the new editor-in-chief of Obstetrics & Gynecology, the official monthly peer-reviewed medical journal of The American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (The College). Dr. Chescheir will succeed James R. Scott, MD, who has been editor-in-chief for 11 years.

Nancy C. ChescheirDr. Chescheir is currently professor and director of prenatal diagnosis at the University of North Carolina (UNC), Chapel Hill. She has authored over 75 journal articles and book chapters related to her primary research interests in prenatal diagnosis, maternal-fetal surgery, patient safety and quality, and international health.

Dr. Chescheir has served on several of The College’s national committees and the Obstetrics & Gynecology Editorial Board. She was one of the principal editorial task force members for the fifth edition of The College’s Your Pregnancy and Childbirth: Month to Month for patients. She is a member of the Society for Maternal-Fetal Medicine and a past president of the Association of Professors of Gynecology and Obstetrics. Currently, Dr. Chescheir serves as the local principal investigator with the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality in the development of a perinatal safety implementation program.

In 2001–2002, Dr. Chescheir participated in the Hedwig van Ameringen Executive Leadership in Academic Medicine® Program for Women. She served as the chair of the department of obstetrics and gynecology at Vanderbilt University School of Medicine in Nashville, TN, from 2005 to 2008. From 2008 to 2010, Dr. Chescheir spent half of her time as the chief of staff and head of obstetrics and gynecology at Bokamoso Private Hospital in Gaborone, Botswana.

Dr. Chescheir graduated with an undergraduate degree in zoology from UNC-Chapel Hill and went on to complete her medical degree and her obstetrics and gynecology residency and maternal-fetal medicine fellowship at the same institution.

Dr. Chescheir will begin serving as editor-elect on January 1, 2013, and assume the editor-in-chief position on July 1, 2013.
