NYS Safe Motherhood Initiative
From 2001-2009 the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists, District II (ACOG) and the New York State Department of Health (NYSDOH) collaborated on the Safe Motherhood Initiative (SMI).The SMI's goal was to improve women's health through quality improvement. This initiative was New York's response to a national effort to reduce pregnancy-related deaths and racial disparities in maternal mortality.
Maternal Mortality Reviews
A major component of the SMI was to conduct timely, on-site maternal mortality reviews. These reviews informed ACOG's development of state-wide recommendations and educational materials. Maternal mortality affects all obstetric providers and hospital participation in the review process was critical to improving maternity care in New York State.
ACOG Has Temporarily Suspended Onsite Maternal Mortality Reviews
However, if your hospital has experienced a maternal mortality please complete the maternal death notification form and fax it to ACOG's confidential registry. If you have any questions, please contact Kristin Zielinski, Director of Medical Education at firstname.lastname@example.org or (518) 436-3461.
