The Association of State and Territorial Health Officers (ASTHO) has established a Learning Community to assist states in the implementation of LARC initiatives focusing on postpartum insertion following delivery. A variety of materials are available on the ASTHO website.

Health Management Associates has published a resource detailing the efforts of particular states to reduce barriers to Medicaid reimbursement for immediate postpartum LARC initiation. In addition to examples of successful strategies employed in South Carolina and Colorado, this resource also offers suggestions for how states can improve access to LARC.

Providers in South Carolina are now able to receive Medicaid reimbursement for inserting an IUD or contraceptive implant in the hospital after a woman has given birth or prior to discharge, as highlighted earlier this month in a U.S Centers for Disease Control and Prevention “Have You Heard?” notification.  The College supports such efforts to improve access and help women avoid unnecessary delays in obtaining LARC methods.
