History of Junior Fellowship

The of Obstetricians and Gynecologists


The Junior Fellow division of The American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists began as the Resident Division of District VI.


District III began a Resident Division.


The classification of Junior Fellow was established as an individual membership.


The Junior Fellow Division Bylaws were established.


The Junior Fellow Districts met at the Annual Clinical Meeting, and the national Junior Fellow organization was initiated, the purpose was outlined, and the Junior Fellow College Advisory Council was established.

“The purpose of the Junior Fellow organization is to stimulate the interest and broaden the experience of residents in obstetrics and gynecology, who are to be the future leaders of our specialty and future Fellows of ACOG”


The first meeting of the Junior Fellow College Advisory Council was held.


Junior Fellow officers began participating in the Fellow District Advisory Council meetings.


There were 3,731 Junior Fellow members.


There were 6,055 Junior Fellow members.


The Chair of the Junior Fellow College Advisory Council became a voting member of the Executive Board.


There are currently 10,240 Junior Fellows. The total College membership is 49,239

Many Junior Fellow leaders have become Fellows and assumed leadership roles in the College.  Several past Junior Fellow District Chairs have recently served as Fellow District Chairs and members of the ACOG Executive Board.

From its beginnings in one district in 1953, Junior Fellow activities have spread to all Districts with participation at the ACOG national level, including participation on the Executive Board, Junior Fellow College Advisory Council, College committees and commissions at the district and section levels, as well as many ob-gyn liaison groups.
