Update from ACOG and the Kentucky Department for Public Health concerning Influenza

The first confirmed cases of influenza have been reported in Kentucky this season from Henderson, and Jefferson counties.

Vaccination is the best way to protect your pregnant patients from severe illness and complications from influenza. If your pregnant patient develops influenza-like-illness (ILI), this algorithm will guide you through ACOG's recommended steps for diagnosis and treatment in order to help prevent serious complications. Note: This triage algorithm can be utilized for telephone or in-person assessment of your patient. Access additional information at

Important Facts:

  • Pregnant and postpartum women are at higher risk for severe illness and complications from influenza than women who are not pregnant.
  • All women who are pregnant or who might be pregnant in the upcoming influenza season are recommended to receive influenza vaccinations.
  • Emphasis should be placed on influenza vaccination of persons who live with or care for persons at high risk for influenza-related complications including health-care personnel- you and your office staff.
  • Vaccination to prevent influenza is particularly important for persons who also are at increased risk for severe medical complications from influenza, or at higher risk for influenza-related outpatient, Emergency Department, or hospital visits.

Influenza vaccinations are available at the Local Health Department, local medical providers, local pharmacies, hospitals, or other community sites. Medical providers who care for pregnant women and postpartum women and who do not administer influenza vaccinations in their offices are especially encouraged to develop partnerships with and refer their patients to the Local Health Department, local hospitals, or local pharmacies for influenza vaccinations.
