Harlem Hospital Center Welcomes the Safe Motherhood Initiative
On January 23rd, the Safe Motherhood Initiative met in New York City for its ninth, in-person quarterly meeting. Over 130 attendees - from hospital chairs to unit staff - from across all parts of the state met in Harlem. Our largest SMI meeting to date. Hosted by Edgar Mandeville, MD, FACOG, Chief of the OB/GYN Department at Harlem Hospital Center, the day was kicked off with remarks from guest speaker Jo Ivey Boufford, MD, President of the New York Academy of Medicine.
Bundle implementation took center stage on the agenda, particularly how to integrate the education within existing EMR systems. North Shore-Long Island Jewish Health System presented strategies on how to accomplish this and representatives from both Epic and GE Centricity Perinatal were on hand to demonstrate the nuances of each of their systems. Hospitals from across the state highlighted various mechanisms for incorporating the bundles into the labor and delivery unit’s culture and achieving buy-in and support from hospital administration.
Additionally, Donnaline Richman, Esq., counsel to Medical Liability Mutual Insurance Company (MLMIC), discussed proper chart documentation and the meeting ended with a presentation of a challenging de-identified patient case review.
The next SMI quarterly meeting will be held on April 17, 2015 at the University of Buffalo School of Medicine. If you have any questions about the Safe Motherhood Initiative, please contact Kristin Zielinski, Medical Education Director, at 518-436-3461 ext. 108 or firstname.lastname@example.org.
