The Safe Motherhood Initiative (SMI) strives to reduce pregnancy related deaths by educating obstetric and maternity care hospitals across New York State. Hospital teams are working together to implement standard approaches for handling New York’s three leading causes of maternal death: obstetric hemorrhage (severe bleeding), venous thromboembolism (blood clots) and severe hypertension in pregnancy (high blood pressure). ACOG District II has provided hospitals with educational materials such as posters, systematic checklists, algorithms, and other tools. In addition, on-site training ensures that standard SMI protocols are effectively implemented.
We are happy to showcase hospitals that are making a difference - thanks to their commitment to the Safe Motherhood Initiative.
