Mandatory E-Prescribing: Are You Ready?
Electronic Prescribing of Controlled Substances (EPCS), aka E-prescribing, will be required for ALL New York State prescriptions, including controlled substances beginning March 27, 2015.
State regulations require a practitioner to register their certified electronic prescribing computer application with the New York State Department of Health, Bureau of Narcotic Enforcement (BNE). To register your computer application with BNE, a EPCS registration form must be completed and submitted via email to firstname.lastname@example.org with "Practitioner EPCS Registration" in the subject line.
While the E-prescribing mandate goes into effect on March 27, 2015, physicians who comply with these regulations may now begin to electronically prescribe controlled substances (EPCS), as long as their EPCS systems are DEA certified.
Additional information is provided on the NYS DOH Electronic Prescribing of Controlled Substances webpage and in Frequently Asked Questions For Electronic Prescribing Of Controlled Substances (EPCS).
The E-prescribing of ALL substances was required under the passage of the I-STOP law in 2012.
