Junior Fellow news

I’m happy to report we held a successful Junior Fellow Day on September 11 in Louisville, KY. The event had more than 50 attendees, including medical students, residents, young physicians, and Fellows.

The meeting was held in conjunction with the Kentucky Section Annual Meeting, which is held with the Kentucky Medical Association. The theme for the Kentucky Section meeting was “Safeguarding Kentuckyʼs Women,” with a focus on women and drug addiction. In keeping with this theme, we organized a clothing and supply drive for women at The Healing Place, a local rehabilitation center.

The morning was split between simulations and hands-on workshops and a mock oral board presentation. Participants were encouraged to view the excellent scientific posters on display. Luke A. Newton, MD, past Junior Fellow Congress Advisory Council chair, gave an interactive lecture during lunch.

The afternoon featured three oral presentations, a Stump the Professors session, and our surgical film winner. Mary E. Sterrett, MD, a resident at the University of Louisville, won the oral presentation component of the meeting with her abstract “Pregnancy Outcomes in Opiate Addicts Treated with Acute Withdrawal versus Methadone Maintenance: A Retrospective Analysis of a Case-Controlled Study.”

In other news, District V held its second annual contest for Junior Fellow community service projects, a mini Junior Fellow Initiative Toolkit contest. The winners were:

  • A Pap smear outreach program for Hispanic women in Ohio
  • An easy-care sustainable garden for women living in a maternity home in Indiana
  • A comprehensive sexual health education program taught by residents and medical students in public schools in Ohio

As we start a new year, I’d like to take the opportunity to welcome our excellent new district officers:

  • District V Junior Fellow vice chair: Rosalyn E. Maben-Feaster, MD, University of Michigan, Ann Arbor
  • District V Junior Fellow secretary-treasurer: Marlena N. Mattingly, MD, Indiana University, Indianapolis
  • District V Junior Fellow advocacy chair: Neena T. Qasba, MD, Indiana University, Indianapolis
